Success Stories: Laura Pekarik

Laura Pekarik’s recipe for success combines entrepreneurship and philanthropy in a personal way. Her Courageous Bakery and Cafe in Elmhurst is home to Cupcakes for Courage, where a portion of the proceeds go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Ride Janie Ride Foundation and other local nonprofit organizations. The initiative began when Laura’s older sister Kathy was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins T-cell lymphoma in 2010.

Success Stories: Theo Darden

For Theo Darden, a simple conversation with a sheriff's deputy while in college forged his future. He went on to have a satisfying career in criminal justice, working as a police officer and supervisor in three different agencies in Wisconsin and for the Attorney General’s Office in the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Among his honors, Darden was named Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 1996. He turned to education because it excited him, and for the 2019-2020 academic year he was named the College of DuPage College-Wide Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Member.

The academic success that Areeb Kidwai achieved at COD was the opposite of his experience in high school, where his GPA was 2.11 after his sophomore year and his behavior was anything but ideal. When he enrolled at COD, it was his only option but provided a fresh start. Kidwai made the most of this second chance and in 2020 was named one of COD's two outstanding graduates. He is now a psychology major at the University of Minnesota.
